Lightning 368 – new deck layout at the Dinghy Show 2008
|

The Lightning 368 on the Dinghy Show stand was from the new class builder, John Claridge Boats and featured the latest proposed deck layout, which was
grafted onto an existing hull. The centre thwart has been removed, and the mainsheet blocks are fixed to a tabernacle rising from the cockpit floor
and going over the centreboard case. This has allowed full-length toe-straps to be added. The mainsheet boom take off blocks are suspended from
strops on the new section boom. The kicker was also attached to the boom by means of a strop over the top of the boom. The new mast is of all carbon
fibre construction, the recently tried all fibreglass one being found to be too flexible, with incorrect bend characteristics. The mast is painted
white to protect it from U.V. degradation. Boom and gooseneck were also of new design. The control line cleats are repositioned slightly, but allow
for more conventional cleats to be fitted. Of course, one striking feature was that of the new, radial cut sail, which was manufactured in Mylar.
This sail is available for the sum of £350. The boat on show was sitting on a custom made stainless steel launching trolley with twin moulded
fibreglass hull supports. This sells at £320. All together, the boat had a more modern look to it as was reflected in it’s up to date price tag,
£4,200 for a standard boat with Dacron sail, composite mast and standard colour hull. £4,500 was the price tag for the ‘Championship Boat’. This
featured all carbon mast, Mylar sail, Harken blocks and cleats and a choice of colours. Both boats have the custom lifting rudder stock, which also
retails separately at £150 including tiller extension. See photos for more details.
